    Our Certified Instructors

Why are Bikram Instructors so Special?

It takes more than a hot room and a list of postures to make your Bikram Method Yoga practice a safe and rewarding experience. Bikram Method Yoga is a specialized form of yoga, requiring appropriate training and knowledge to teach it effectively.

Our instructors are in the room to make your experience safe and more enjoyable. They love people, they love teaching yoga, and they greatly appreciate the opportunity to teach you!

Why use certified Bikram Yoga Instructors?

Bikram Choudhury, the creator of Bikram Yoga, personally trains and certifies his instructors to ensure that his methods and philosophy are preserved and properly taught. To be certified as an instructor in the Bikram Method of yoga, an instructor must complete an intensive nine week training session requiring over 800 hours of study.

A Certified Bikram Yoga Instructor at a Certified Bikram Yoga studio provides the best possible instruction in the Bikram Method. Certified Instructors have a continuing connection to Bikram Choudhury and his training staff, allowing the Certified Studio to draw from all of the resources Bikram’s training center has to offer. This includes special seminars, posture clinics, guest instructors, and answers to questions which may arise in a particular practitioner’s Bikram Yoga practice.

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

I used to live with chronic neck pain and TMJ from 1996 until I took my first Bikram Yoga class in January 2001. Within 3 weeks of practicing, my neck pain and TMJ disappeared. I wanted to share the wonderful benefits of Bikram Yoga with others and decided to go to training. I’ve watched the yoga help me through three pregnancies and home births, help me get back into shape, and continue to help tone and strengthen my body and mind from inside out, bones to skin!

What was your first Bikram class like?

Yoga mats weren’t even required yet! We practiced on white towels and my instructor sang the dialogue! I really enjoyed it but woke up so sore the next day; my neck hurt, my legs hurt; I used muscles I didn’t know I had. My very first class was the best thing I could have done for myself and I am still hooked 12 years later!

Advice you’d give to any new student:

Don’t forget to BREATHE, pace yourself, and sit down if you ever feel dizzy! And take your second class within 24 hours of your first!

What is your favorite Bikram memory?

In 2004, he invited all the Arizona Bikram studio owners and teachers out to lunch near the Biltmore. He asked us to share how the yoga has helped us; he was very sincere.

How has Bikram changed your life?

Bikram initially changed my perspective on “exercise”. After years of competitive basketball, weightlifting, and long distance running, I had begun to feel pain and stiffness in my shoulders, hips, knees and low back. The Bikram method helped to heal my body, while simultaneously increasing my strength, flexibility and endurance. In addition to the physical aspects of this yoga, I also became more mentally focused along with having increased energy through out the day.

What was your first Bikram class like?

My girlfriend at the time (and now wife) convinced me to take a Saturday 10 am class in Scottsdale more than 10 years ago. At the time, my hips and knees were so inflexible I could hardly sit cross-legged. Despite my frustration, I felt rejuvenated and eager to try class again.

Advice you’d give to any new student:

    Come back tomorrow!

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

Bikram Yoga has changed my life by re-introducing myself to myself.

What was your first Bikram class like?

I remember how badly my shoulders hurt after the first set of breathing, they were on fire… 3 minutes into class!  Then a few postures later, I was told to stand on one leg and hold the other one for 60 seconds – easy enough, right?  I think I fell out of it 72 times.  My mind was racing, my heart was beating, and my legs were quivering.  At that point, I knew this was the most challenging “exercise” I have ever attempted.  I was hooked.  Now I teach here.

Advice you would give to any new student:

Breathe, drink lots of water, be patient with yourself, and come back as soon as  you can.

    “If you can, you must.”

What was your first Bikram class like?

I thought I was going to pass out but I was determined to not leave the room. It was nothing like I had ever done before. I was hooked from day one!

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

Bikram Yoga has given me the opportunity to travel and share yoga with people from all over the world. I really enjoy the students, teachers, faculty and everyone associated with this yoga.

What was your first Bikram class like?

My first class was one of shock, disbelief and excitement. I had no clue what I was walking into. A buddy of mine convinced me to join him; he didn’t tell me it was hot nor did he tell me it wasn’t a good idea to eat a cheeseburger an hour before class! I skipped half the postures; I was just trying to survive the heat. As challenging as my first class was, I immediately knew I stumbled into something good.

Advice you’d give to any new student:

Take it easy, rest and get acclimated to the heat the first 1-2 weeks. As your body acclimates to the heat, slowly increase your intensity and focus.

What is your favorite Bikram memory?

She graduated from ASU in December 2007 with a BA in Journalism. Erin began practicing Bikram Yoga in October, 2008. She became certified to teach Bikram Yoga in the fall of 2009 in Las Vegas.

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

I can’t put into words how much Bikram Yoga has changed my life; it seems to be my answer for almost everything in life. After years and years of competitive sports, marathons and doing more harm to my body than good, I learned what the true meaning of “exercise” is. Through my practice, I have learned how to let go of things I cannot control and to live in the present moment. Most importantly, Bikram has taught me how to value my body and life in a different light and I’m forever grateful for that.

What was your first Bikram class like?

Awful. I had just finished a 15-mile run and wanted to do some “stretching”. I spent the majority of the class lying in savasana and didn’t come back for over 6 months. It wasn’t until after my first (and only) marathon that I realized Bikram was exactly what I needed. I’ve been hooked ever since.

Advice you would give to any new student:

You don’t have to love class, you just have to keep coming!

What is your favorite Bikram memory?

My last class of teacher training! Everyone including Bikram was dancing around on their mats; the energy in the room that night is something I will never forget.

    What is your favorite Bikram-ism?

“Having doesn’t mean anything if you don’t know how to use it.”

Where is your favorite place to hang out besides BYT, of course?

Being on the lake with my fiancé or any foreign country (when possible)

    What song best describes you?

“Born to fly” – Sara Evans

    My Nikon D50 camera.

    What is your guilty pleasure?

Buying new swimsuits and Peanut M&Ms.

Where is your favorite place to eat in the Valley?

    Pita Jungle/The Breakfast Club

    What is your favorite scent?

The desert after the rain or my perfume, Pink Sugar.

Why do you like it hot?

There is something about walking out after class drenched in my own sweat that is purifying and humbling all at the same time, plus I hate being cold!

    www.mbstherapeutic.com

How has Bikram changed your life?

I originally started practicing Bikram Yoga because it was the only yoga class I could do that didn’t have any weight bearing poses on my wrists. It has taught me to detach from the little things in life and be present and aware in any situation; I have become much more grounded and calm. And thanks to Locust, I have no pain in my hands and forearms from doing my work!

What was your first Bikram class like?

I loved it from my very first class! I loved the instruction, the postures, the heat, but most of all I loved how the teacher incorporated all aspects of yoga into the class, body, mind and spirit. By the end of my first class, I already knew I wanted to teach this someday.

Advice you would give to any new student:

Enjoy the ride, stay teachable and push yourself outside your comfort zone every class. Do not give into that little insignificant voice in your head telling you that you can’t, or that loud and obnoxious voice telling you that you already know all this.

What is your favorite Bikram memory?

My favorite memory of Bikram will always be my first class at teacher training. What a presence this man has! He came in to the room and hopped up on his HUGE podium with a great big smile on his face and said, “Hi guys, you want to teach yoga?” Then proceeded to kill us for the next 2 hours!

    What is your favorite Bikram-ism?

“You’re never too old, never too sick, never too bad, it’s never too late to start from scratch once again.”

Where is your favorite place to hang out besides BYT, of course?

Outside hiking around in the mountains or going to the movies.

    What is your guilty pleasure?

    VH1 reality TV

If you could meet one person, who would it be?

It’s a toss up between Jesus and Buddha, I have some questions for them.

Where is your favorite place to eat in the Valley?

    Cibo

What is your most prized possession?

Peace of mind, sometimes I misplace it though.

    What is your favorite scent?

An aromatherapy mixture I created, a blend of spearmint, lavender, lemon and sage.

Why do you like it hot?

Because of the mental challenge it presents; it has shown me there is much more to me than I think and what I think is going to kill me … of course, is not!

    Katherine Grubenhoff

    Certified Bikram Instructor

Katherine is originally from Boston but has lived in Arizona for most of her life. She studied Kinesiology at Arizona State University before becoming certified to teach Bikram Yoga in the fall of 2007 in Hawaii.

How has Bikram yoga changed your life?

I don’t know where I would be without yoga. I starting practicing Bikram not long after my Dad passed away and it became such an outlet for me. Exercise has always been my way to deal with stress and Bikram is the perfect combination of being physically challenging while also a mental and emotional comfort…a true moving meditation:)
I feel so lucky to be part of the Bikram community as both a student and a teacher. It has let me travel to other states & countries and, while in a foreign place, lets me feel at home. It has pushed me to do things I never thought I could do. And it allows me be surrounded by positive happy people everyday.

What was your first Bikram class like?

I took my very first Bikram class in Dublin, Ireland. I spent a year there in 2005 and almost everyday of that year I was cold. But when a friend took me to the Bikram studio there, I felt like I was home:) Finally warm! It was such a weird experience at first. The studio was down a little ally with no sign and a tiny little door you had to duck down to get in through; it was one of those “Is this for real?” moments.

Advice you would give to any new student:

    Always to come back!

Where is your favorite place to hang out at besides BYT, of course?

At home with my new puppy, Roth.

    A bracelet from my dad.

    What is your favorite scent?

The smell of Bikram in the morning.

What is your most embarrassing teaching moment?

When I first starting teaching I’d be so nervous that I’d switch the starting letters of words; the most common one being “chuck your chin to your chest” instead of saying “tuck your chin to your chest”.

She is currently obtaining her 200 RYS certification.

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

It has allowed me to find the real me that was buried under a bunch of criticism, judgment and distractions. I feel calmer than I’ve ever felt. It has helped me raise my two teenage boys without completely losing my mind. It helped me quit cigarettes. Overall, it has helped me to focus on who I am not who I was trying to be.

What was your first Bikram class like?

My first class was in August 2001. The class was overwhelming.  Too many people, and too hot. I had body issues so it was hard to watch all these girls that were half naked and super flexible. It was traumatizing. However, I came back the next day; I wanted to be on of those half naked, flexible girls. I felt more renewed after each class I took.

Advice you would give to a new student:

Don’t make a decision until after class 25. Keep going. The heat, the people and the awkwardness go away. You find the passion for life. It changed my life and it can change yours too.

What is your most embarrassing teaching moment?

When a man walked out of my class and told me I was too loud in front of all the 4:30 Friday students. I was only teaching for about 2 weeks and was mortified! I feared going back in that room!

She moved to Hawaii for graduate school and during her time there she practiced Bikram Yoga. She left a year later with her Dive Master certification to attend Bikram Yoga Teacher Training. Tricia became certified to teach Bikram Yoga in the fall of 2009 in Las Vegas.

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

It has changed the entire way I approach life. I used to have so many expectations and restrictions regarding who I was or what I was supposed to do. It helped me see the opportunities in life and gave me the self-awareness and confidence to take advantage of them.

What was your first Bikram class like?

My friend brought me to my first class at BYT in May 2007. Ruddy was teaching. I remember watching the front row in silent awe that they could do all these postures so beautifully. I guess I am one of the lucky ones; I loved it from the start.

Advice you would give to any new student:

Just come as much as you can and remember that all you have to do is breathe. Have an open mind and don’t put limitations on yourself by forming expectations.

What is your most prized possession?

    My dive gear

    What is your favorite scent?

The desert after it rains and the magical combination of seawater and neoprene.

Why do you like it hot?

I love the way my whole body relaxes when I walk into the hot room and how clean I feel from the inside out after yoga. I’ve always loved the warmth on my skin; I don’t do cold very well.

What is your most embarrassing teaching moment?

I really wanted the class to listen word for word on the set up of a posture so I told them to move exactly with me and to not go ahead of the dialogue.  I was also thinking about a correction I wanted to give a particular student and was focused on that when I noticed people were looking at me a bit funny; I had jumped ahead and was giving the instruction for spine twist instead of head to knee.

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

There are so many ways Bikram Yoga has changed my life. I started practicing because someone in my “Mothers of Multiples” club told me it would help me remain calm in stressful situations. She must have seen the “crazy” in my eyes and knew I needed the help. I thank God for her because my practice has brought me back to sanity and kept us all (my family) from utter chaos. Bikram Yoga also helped me to be more aware of my body and emotions. I am continually learning how to take better care of myself. I have been practicing since 2008. In 2010 I was able to get completely off the medications I was taking for depression, anxiety and thyroid issues. I have made so many friends and enjoy my practice and our studio so much. The teachers all bring something unique to the practice and have really touched my heart. It’s so true that you get what you need in each class and even though every class is the same, no two are the same. It’s, how shall I put this…Rad.

What was your first Bikram class like?

Well, Reba taught my first class. She was so kind to me and called me Alicia Keys so she could remember my name. I wore a shirt that was too loose and fell over my head during the inversions. There was another guy in the class who was there for his first time too. He wore jeans shorts so I didn’t feel so bad. He also farted audibly which I thought was awesome. It brought such levity to my first experience. I never saw that guy again and if he reads this and knows it’s him, I hope he would give class another shot. I remember I kept thinking it was hot, which was true but it did not serve me well to focus on that. I tried instead to focus on that guys fart, so I could keep smiling. That fart saved my life.

Advice you would give to any new student:

Breathe. It’s not a competition. Breathe. Listen and do the best you can. Breathe. Take care of yourself. Breathe.

    What is your favorite Bikram-ism?

“Full Lungs!” Thanks to Jon Knoche.

Where is your favorite place to hang out besides BYT, of course?

I am in a season of my life where my favorite place to hang out doesn’t much matter…young children do that to you. So besides BYT, which truly is my carved out space for me, I suppose I am enjoying the playground. I bring a big blanket and lay it under a tree. I always bring a book to read while the kids play. Sometimes I even get to read a little of it.

    Zonya Ojeda

    Certified Bikram Yoga Teacher

I was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. My father was in the Army so we moved around a lot until we finally settled down in El Paso, TX. When I was 21, I moved to San Diego for college and ended up managing one of the busiest boxing gyms in Southern California. I moved to Tempe, AZ to start a new chapter of my life!

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

I found Bikram yoga about 10 years ago and it has made a significant impact on my life. When I committed myself more to my practice I felt as if though I became more aware of myself, my thoughts and my body.

What was your first Bikram class like?

My first class was hot, hard and water never tasted so good, but I was determined to make it through the entire class (I’m stubborn like that). After class I didn’t think I would be able to drive home because I was in such a haze. When I finally did make it home I showered and took the best nap I had ever had. The next day I went back (I don’t even know why). I felt so sick but something felt right and I continued my practice.

Advice you would give to any new student:

Stay in the room, stay still and calm your mind.

Where is your favorite place to hang out besides BYT, of course?

Not so much a place, but a favorite person to hang out with – my nephew, Xavier.

If you could meet one person, who would it be?

    Paulo Coehlo

What is your most prized possession?

My two chihuahuas: Bloo and Pinky.

    What is your guilty pleasure?

    Shopping.

Where is your favorite place to eat in the Valley?

    The Blue Nile

    What is your favorite scent?

    Jasmine and Ylang Ylang

Why do you like it hot?

    It makes my joints juicy!

I grew up in San Jose, California and moved to Arizona in the summer of 2005. Graduated from ASU with a BFA in dance and have been dancing with Dulce Dance Company for the past two years. I live in the west valley with my husband and our cat, Monkie. The drive to BYT is worth it – the people here are amazing and it makes for a nurturing, safe, welcoming place to practice this craziness!

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

I have exercise-induced asthma and would have to use my inhaler before working out but ever since I have been practicing, I have not used my inhaler once! Plus now when I go running my breath is easy and I feel as though I can run so much longer and farther than before. I still enjoy traditional weight training and running, but nothing gives me the same feeling that I get after I’ve finished a Bikram class.

What was your first Bikram class like?

I thought I was going to die! I did not prepare properly – pretty much woke up one day and said, “I think I’ll try Bikram Yoga today” Not a good idea! But I powered through, nearly passing out, and stayed in the room the whole class. When I walked out of the room I was already excited to come back the next day – I was addicted.

Advice you would give to any new student:

HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE – and come back even if you hated your first class.

Where is your favorite place to hang out besides BYT, of course?

Anywhere with my hubby and my gato.

    What song best describes you?

    “Alive’” by P.O.D.

If you could meet one person, who would it be?

    Don’t know.

What is your most prized possession?

Not really a possession, but my marriage.

    What is your guilty pleasure?

Chili-cheese fries and anything with dark chocolate.

Where is your favorite place to eat in the Valley?

    Pita Jungle and Lee’s Sandwiches.

    What is your favorite scent?

    Campfires and pine trees.

Why do you like it hot?

    I love to sweat.

    Karla Kay

Certified Bikram Instructor, Life Coach, and Grief Recovery Specialist

June 2012 marks the 5th anniversary of the first day my life began to change as I walked into the Bikram Yoga Tempe studio. Although I had done many different types of yoga since 2000, I never felt committed to a practice. I couldn’t understand why yoga was never done in a heated room to make it easier on my sore muscles. Someone told me there was such a thing; it was called Bikram Yoga. I googled it and took my first class the next day in June 2007. I immediately knew after class that I had found my yoga. The instructors were great, and the desk staff always so helpful. Yet, I was still going through a very dark time in my life.

In 2003, I was in a tragic car accident where three people died and my life as I knew it changed forever. My family and I were driving home from a short vacation from Magic Mountain before our girls started back to school. We were about an hour away from home when a tire blew and our SUV rolled several times instantly killing everyone on the right hand side. My husband, my youngest daughter who was 11, and my oldest daughter (who survived the accident), her best friend who was 15, also died.

My daughter and I were air lifted and the doctors actually wheeled me next to my 14 year old daughter to say any words I needed to say. They told me I had less than a 50 percent chance of surviving the surgeries that I needed. Little did they know I had crossed over with my husband and daughter and they told me it was not my time, I had to go back. My injuries were severe, as I went from a wheel chair to walker to finally being able to stand on my own.

When I found Bikram Yoga Tempe, although I always felt great after class, I attended only a couple classes a week and would skip a week or two. I continued this cycle for a couple of years. In between there, I was in another car accident and needed another surgery for a fractured elbow.

In 2009, I decided to do the 30 Day Challenge. It changed my life. I started making more of a commitment to start taking care of myself and healing myself from the inside out. I always looked for answers in my savasana’s. In 2010, after a long savasana, I heard a voice say, ‘drop everything and go to teacher training.’ So I went. And the day of teacher training graduation, I received in my hands my first book that I had worked over three years on, Grief: The Universal Emotion of Loss.

This yoga continues to help center and ground me in the work I do today working with people in grief, loss and trauma. Physically, this yoga has helped me gain back the strength in the left side of my body, and repaired nerve damage in both sides of my legs. Spiritually, it connects me to a deeper part of myself and my loved ones and helps with the deep self-realization that life after grief truly exists.
My hope is that someday Bikram yoga will be prescribed after grief, loss and trauma as easily as an anti-depressant.

Please join me at Changing Hands Bookstore on July 27th from 7 to 9 PM for a talk and book signing! You can purchase my book at Bikram Yoga Tempe, Changing Hands, Borders, and Amazon.com.

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

Bikram yoga has changed my life in so many ways. Through self realization I know that anything is possible in life. I have a deeper understanding of who I am through connecting the mind, body, and spirit into one, I am whole again. This yoga has also helped me through my physical injuries I sustained in a car accident where I was given a 50% chance to live.

What was your first Bikram class like?

Hot, sweaty, and oh soooo good!

Advice you would give to any new student:

Don’t give up, take a deep breath and know you are in the perfect place at the perfect time in your life.

What is your favorite Bikram memory?

When Bikram yelled at me to sit my hips in the chair in Awkward
Pose not a bar stool, and when he handed me my teaching
    certification!

“A healthy spine is a healthy mind.”

Anywhere by water, with family and friends and on the dance

What is your most embarrassing teaching moment?

Oh dear which one? Not sure you can print this… In wind removing pose instead of saying, “Interlace your ten fingers and get a nice tight grip”, I said,”Interlace your fingers for
a ten inch grip.” Oops! I was so embarrassed!

She met her husband, Jeremy Fairley, while practicing at Bikram Yoga Tempe. They moved to Hawaii to both teach on Oahu for a couple of years, and recently moved back to Arizona so she could pursue a Nursing degree. She became certified to teach Bikram Yoga in the fall of 2009 in Las Vegas.

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

My first class was so horrible I barley remember it. I realized how much I had beat up my body while trying to stay healthy. I was pretty much hooked after that. I have always been infatuated by the human body and how it will always respond to us good or bad with everything we do, so I was determined to heal my body from the inside out and with that came the “marriage between the mind and body” Yoga to me, is my miracle so I plan to share it with the rest of the world for as long as I can.

What was your first Bikram class like?

Well, like I said it was like a horrific experience. I can’t even recall all of it :) I do remember after pranayama breathing i needed a break. By hands to feet pose I thought the teacher was crazy and the lady next to me had to be a 60 year old gymnast…. I thought, is that what a Japanese ham sandwich looks like? My mind was everywhere and I couldn’t do any of the postures especially savasana. I was beat-up!

Advice you would give to any new student:

Embrace the discomfort…. you are changing your body and healing your afflictions. Like Bikram would say, “The right way is the hard way!”

What is your favorite Bikram memory?

At teacher training he would start dancing for no reason sometimes. He loves to dance and sing!

    What is your favorite Bikram-ism?

Well, I have a few but my favorite is “Don’t be sad. Don’t be lonely.” He would like to say that around Triangle pose.

Where is your favorite place to hang out besides BYT, of course?

Outside and when I’m fortunate enough, near water.

    What song best describes you?

    “Change” -Blind Melon

If you could meet one person, who would it be?

    Siddhartha

What is your most prized possession?

    My wedding ring.

    What is your guilty pleasure?

    Beer.

Where is your favorite place to eat in the Valley?

At home when my husband cooks! :)

    What is your favorite scent?

    Rose Oil.

Why do you like it hot?

    It’s better than cold!

What is your most embarrassing teaching moment?

There are so many to choose from! I was teaching in Hawaii and I had just finished speaking about staying still and silent for the first savasana, just then I went for my water bottle and awkwardly fell off the podium and dropping my water bottle on a student’s shoulder….. yeah, that was awesome. ;)

They moved to Hawaii to both teach on Oahu for a couple of years, and recently moved back to Arizona to teach where it all started. He became certified to teach Bikram Yoga in the fall of 2006 in Los Angeles.

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

My Bikram practice has taught me how to be patient and introspective without judgement. My job as an instructor allows me to see the world!

What was your first Bikram class like?

Ben Zorensky, co-owner of BYT, nagged at me to come to class for over a year before I finally gave in. He neglected to tell me about the heat, so I showed up in sweatpants with a dixie cup size bottle of water. I was physically humbled before we even made it to Eagle pose! I left class thinking I would never do it again. One year later I came back for my second class with a whole new mindset and decided to go to teacher training so that I could help others experience the transformation of body, mind and spirit!

Advice you would give to any new student:

Be patient and listen to the dialogue in each class.  All of the instructions are perfectly sequenced for you so you don’t have to think!

What is your favorite Bikram memory?

I had the privilege of instructing a 93 year old woman last year at the Honolulu studio. I remember inputting her info into the computer and when it came to the birthdate field it read 1917! She had been practicing Bikram for over 20 years! I was surprised of course, but not shocked because I know this stuff works!

    What is your favorite Bikram-ism?

“You’re never to sick, never to old, never to broken to start again!”

Where is your favorite place to hang out besides BYT, of course?

I am a big fan of being by water, wether it be the ocean or mountain lakes and streams. I enjoy spending time with some high quality H2O!

    What song best describes you?

    “Superbad” -James Brown

If you could meet one person, who would it be?

    Siddhartha

What is your most prized possession?

My dad’s Harley Electra-glide Ultra Classic.

    What is your guilty pleasure?

The occasional viewing of some trashy reality TV.

Where is your favorite place to eat in the Valley?

All around cuisine: Pita Jungle Mexican: La Casa Reynoso

    What is your favorite scent?

    Plumeria trees in bloom.

Why do you like it hot?

I have always preferred hot climates over cold ones, spicy foods to bland, and spirited people over introverts. I like to warm my body from bones to skin to protect my joints, ligaments and tendons. A good sweat is such a great internal cleanser for the body and mind!

What is your most embarrassing teaching moment?

That moment has to be when I was within my first few weeks as an instructor. I was sharing some of the benefits of savasana on your stomach. One of those being that you get a nice passive stretch to your neck by turning it to both sides to rest on your ear. Innocent enough, however when I went to describe it I said “Turning your head to both sides to rest provides balance as well as a great stretch to your cervix!” Instead of "your cervical spine"! Needless to say I got a few giggles. The guys were not sure if they had one or not. I quickly moved on glad that the heat had everyones faces red so mine did not stand out!

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

Bikram Yoga gave me a new life, pulling me out of depression and anxiety disorder.

What was your first Bikram class like?

It was way back in Jan 2005 so don’t remember much. All I remember was that I was in the back row, rested most of the time and was appreciated by the teacher at the end of the class.

Advice you would give to any new student:

    Breathe…have fun.

What is your favorite Bikram memory?

Delivering Half-moon in front of Bikram Guruji. He was quiet for a few seconds and said, “You are already good. No need to try harder.” A moment of joy!

    What is your favorite Bikram-ism?

"Triangle benefits the heart and lungs, forcing them to work together like an arranged marriage in India. They may not want to be together but they have to be. No choice."

Where is your favorite place to hang out besides BYT, of course?

    Home…with my family.

    What song best describes you?

I don’t know much about western songs but the one that can describe me well is the one sung by Bikram Guruji – “Pyar karo, pyar karo, pyar karo…” (Love everyone…)

If you could meet one person, who would it be?

My brother…we lost him in 2008. From the living, one of the two – President Clinton or President Obama.

    It reminds me of home…India.

What is your most embarrassing teaching moment?

Starting the class with the Half-Moon pose…totally missed the Pranayama that day and was wondering why everyone was not moving with my dialogue.

    Front Desk

I grew up in Albuquerque New Mexico, then moved to Denver Colorado in 2002. I moved to Phoenix in the summer of 2003. I am a certified dental assistant and a Dj on the side. I have been a vegan for over 2 years. Some good friends recommended I try it. I was over weight and my doctor was getting ready to put me on cholesterol medications. I read a book called “The Kind Diet” by Alicia Silverstone and it changed my life! I have been vegan ever since. I lost over 70 pounds the first year and I lowered my cholesterol and didn’t need to be put on any medications. I was introduced to Bikram Yoga from a co-worker who begged me to try it. She thought I would like it especially since I am such a healthy eater. I thought she was crazy when she told me how hot it gets. Another friend told me how it got him through his cancer treatments. I decided to try it one day. I signed up with the 2 week unlimited special and I was hooked immediately. After my two weeks was up I signed up for the unlimited monthly membership. You can catch me in class sweating it out at least 4-5 days a week.

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

There are many ways Bikram Yoga has changed my life. For one I used to be addicted to marijuana. Since I began practicing I have quit smoking and have completely cleared my mind and body. I sleep better at night. I have less stress in my life. I feel healthy and I get compliments almost daily on how good I look.

What was your first Bikram class like?

Intense! I thought to myself “This is yoga, how hard can it be?” Boy was I wrong. I got sick half way through my first class and threw up in the bathroom. I went back in the room and finished the class. Once I finished class that day I was immediately hooked. I came back the next day and completed a 30 day challenge within my first month of practicing.

Advice you would give to any new student:

Breathe and keep calm. As simple as that sounds it’s easy to feel anxious and overwhelmed during yoga practice. Don’t be hard on yourself. Drink lots of water the day before practice and the day of practice. Remember that it is just a practice, you don’t have to be perfect.

What is your favorite Bikram memory?

Getting to meet him after his lecture in Scottsdale Arizona. He spent time with me and answered all of my questions. He didn’t rush me or anyone who wanted to ask him questions or get their pictures taken with him. I thought that was awesome that he did that.

    What is your favorite Bikram-ism?

“Nothing is more important than your life.”

Where is your favorite place to hang out besides BYT, of course?

At home snug on the couch reading a book. Also, working on anything music related.

    What song best describes you?

    “Flashback” by Calvin Harris

If you could meet one person, who would it be?

It’s a toss up between Madonna and Bjork.

What is your most prized possession?

    My life. Period.

    What is your guilty pleasure?

I know I’m vegan, but I will occasionally have a piece of cheese pizza from Jimmy and Joe’s pizza as a guilty pleasure. That is the only time I will give into any dairy products.

Where is your favorite place to eat in the Valley?

    Pita Jungle or Swaddee.

    What is your favorite scent?

Aqua Di Gio by Giorgio Armani

Why do you like it hot?

It is relaxing for my muscles. Plus it helps me to concentrate on keeping a clear and calm mind in and out of class.

    Jennifer Jorde

    Certified Bikram Instructor

I grew up in Utah, graduated from WSU, and moved to Arizona in 1997. I discovered Bikram Yoga in 2010 and went to teacher training Spring 2012. I am the mother to four wonderful children. My hobbies include traveling, hiking, photography, piano, art, literature, and everything/anything my kids are doing.

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

I have always been very active. I enjoy running, hiking, dancing, weight lifting, swimming, and boxing. The allure to hot yoga was to build flexibility and strength. In the Bikram room I found far more than a physical workout. The series has helped me develop physically, but more important have been the mental benefits. The ability to find peace and just breathe in what can sometimes be a very challenging environment has made a huge difference in my life. I have been thrilled to discover the glorious power of Bikram Yoga to heal body, mind, and spirit.

What was your first Bikram class like?

Ridiculous! I had delivered my youngest child six weeks prior, so I came in big sweat pants. When the teacher helped me, he referred to me as “my friend in the long costume”. Besides the fact that I was overdressed and soaking wet, I absolutely loved the yoga! Bikram provides an intensity that no other workout can give you!!

Advice you would give to any new student:

    Just breathe!

What is your favorite Bikram memory?

One class at teacher training, Bikram was in true form – truly defining “torture chamber”. Towards the end of the class he mistakenly skipped Rabbit Pose and started Head to Knee with Stretching Pose. A few students yelled out his oversight. In his silliest tone, he sang, “Excuse me for living!” I have never laughed so hard. Maybe you had to be there :)

    What is your favorite Bikram-ism?

“Never too old, never too sick, never too late to start again from scratch and change your life.” ~ Bikram Choudhury

Where is your favorite place to hang out besides BYT, of course?

Anywhere as long as I’m with my precious family.

    What song best describes you?

There are far too many songs to pick just one, but at the moment it’s “California Dreamin”. (Go Lakers!!)

If you could meet one person, who would it be?

Again, too many to pick just one. But with the Olympics just finishing up, Oscar Pistorius is my new hero. He is the South African who was the first amputee to compete in track and field at the Olympics. What an amazing and inspirational man!

What is your most prized possession?

    My life.

    What is your guilty pleasure?

Passion fruit iced tea and shopping.

Where is your favorite place to eat in the Valley?

    Olive & Ivy.

    What is your favorite scent?

    Vanilla.

Why do you like it hot?

It’s hard and super intense! Plus, after class my body feels like it just received a massage … only on the inside!

What is your most embarrassing teaching moment?

As a new teacher, I’m sure the moments are forthcoming! I feel so fortunate to be part of the BYT family and look forward to sharing the gifts and benefits of Bikram’s Beginning Yoga.

I’m brave, resilient, compassionate and believe in peace, love, and wellness!!   I am from Huntington Beach, CA and moved to Tempe late 2009.  In addition to working at BYT, I am an Independent Consultant with Arbonne.  I love helping people and I love practicing Bikram Yoga.  I live with my partner, Zach, and our two kitties.  We love time off together and visiting family.  My goal is to attend Bikram Yoga Teacher Training Fall 2014!!

How has Bikram Yoga changed your life?

I played soccer and sports for 20 years and have had three knee surgeries.  I had a jalopy of body; unable to stand, walk, or be minimally active without being extremely uncomfortable.  My physical therapist literally told me that they had exhausted all treatment and they could nothing for me. I was depressed and in constant pain, so I self medicated and took up drinking and smoking.  Bikram Yoga has given me cardiovascular exercise, strength, and flexibility.  This practice has enabled me to be active and exercise again, happy and healthy, regain confidence, and regain a strong sense of Self.

What was your first Bikram class like?

It was about 10 years ago.  I had read about the benefits of Hot Yoga to those who over-exercised themselves into injury (that was me)! I recall thinking to myself during class, how much longer did I have to be in here!  Every minute lasted a year.  And, you know what; I lived to tell the tale.  The rewards were both immediate and long term.  I was looking at the big picture; experiencing and anticipating the healing powers practicing offered me.

Advice you would give to any new student:

Be sure to breathe.  Stay in the room.  Listen to the teacher. Have fun and smile!  Re-hydrate and come back tomorrow!

What is your favorite Bikram memory?

    Joining the BYT community!!

    What is your favorite Bikram-ism?

“You’re never too old, never too sick, never too bad; it’s never too late to start from scratch once again.” And of course, the unrelenting and uncompromising, “lock the knee; lock the knee, last chance, LOCK THE KNEE!”

    What song best describes you?

    “She’s Like a Rainbow” ~The Rolling Stones

What is your most prized possession?

    My dreams.

    What is your guilty pleasure?

    Almond butter and beer!

    What is your favorite scent?

Orange blossoms in spring and Arbonne’s Dreamer fragrance.

Why do you like it hot?

It enables a deeper stretch and the body to detoxify through the skin.  Anyway, when else do you find the opportunity to sweat like that…and love it!
