25 Pound Weight Loss, Stronger, Feeling Better
I had tried Bikram yoga when the ‘before’ picture was taken, but only once or twice a week and very irregularly. All this time I played soccer, did spin class, and lifted some weights.
The yoga really helped with flexibility and recovering from muscle soreness. Even though I was doing some sort of exercise at least 3 days per week, my weight never changed.
Then, for most of the past year, I practiced at least 3 days a week. That’s when things really started to change.
Since the ‘before’ picture, I’ve lost about 25 lbs–mostly in the middle. My core is a lot stronger, legs are stronger, I’ve got more endurance, and of course, I’m more flexible too. I drink more water and less caffeine. I started to eat better without really thinking about it. I made the connection between what I ate (and drank!), how I felt in class, and I chose to feel better.
Yes, I could run, lift weights, stretch, sit in a sauna and maybe get the same physical results. But what I really enjoy are the mental and emotional benefits. I’m a lot calmer and take things more in stride than I did a few years ago. I’ve learned to be a lot more patient with myself and with others.
When I first started practicing, I had a hard time looking myself in the eye, much less anyone else.
My outlook on the world and my life is a lot better. I lost a lot of other unnecessary baggage along with the 25 pounds. It’s these things that will keep me practicing regularly and maybe take another challenge in 2008.
